Everything you need to know

Dental implants give your confidence back by:
• Replacing one or more teeth without affecting the adjacent ones,
• Supporting a bridge which eliminates the need for a partial denture, and
• Providing support and comfort for a denture.

Root canal treatment, or Endodontics, treats the damaged pulp (nerve and blood supply of tooth) to remove the infection and relieve from pain and sensitivity. In early stages, there may be no pain and just sensitivity. In some cases, the tooth darkens in colour indicating a dying nerve. Root Canal Treatment, hence, involves the creation of canals through micro-drills and drainage of nerve infection. After this, the endodontist fills each of the root canals and the chamber with an inert material and seals the opening. With the removal of nerves and blood supply from the tooth, it is best that the tooth be fitted with a crown which increases the prognosis of the tooth by six times.

A crown is a tooth-shaped dental restoration that is used to cap or completely encase a single damaged tooth or dental implant. They can be made from a variety of materials and are permanently bonded to their foundation with dental cement. There are three types of dental crowns: Porcelain fused to metal: Porcelain is fused on a metal shell for a natural appearance of crowns which are suitable for both front and back teeth. All-Ceramic: These crowns look the most lifelike as they are made from natural materials like feldspar and zirconia. They are also biocompatible, and are better for those who are allergic to metal. Zirconia crowns are most preferred when it comes to dental aesthetics and smile makeovers. All-Resin: These are made from composite resin, such as acrylic polymers mixed with silicon dioxide, and are very affordable. The acrylics used can be color-matched to natural teeth, but they are less durable and more susceptible to fractures.

A typical bridge consists of two crowns (one on each side of the gap created by missing teeth) and a false tooth/teeth to fill that gap. These two crowned ‘anchoring teeth’ are called abutment teeth. They can be natural teeth or dental implants.
