Root canal treatment, or Endodontics, treats the damaged pulp (nerve and blood supply of tooth) to remove the infection and relieve from pain and sensitivity. In early stages, there may be no pain and just sensitivity. In some cases, the tooth darkens in colour indicating a dying nerve.
Root Canal Treatment, hence, involves the creation of canals through micro-drills and drainage of nerve infection. After this, the endodontist fills each of the root canals and the chamber with an inert material and seals the opening. With the removal of nerves and blood supply from the tooth, it is best that the tooth be fitted with a crown which increases the prognosis of the tooth by six times.
If the pulp becomes infected, the infection may spread to the whole root canal system leading to an abscess – inflammation, pus and swelling in gums. .
The symptoms of an abscess can range from a dull ache to severe pain, and the tooth may be tender when you bite. If RCT is not done, the infection may spread and the tooth may need to be taken out.

In the past, a root-filled tooth would often darken after treatment. However, with modern techniques this does not usually happen. Tooth coloured filling material and crowns give a pleasant appearance to your tooth just like the other healthy teeth.
The alternative is to have the tooth out. Once the pulp is destroyed it can’t heal, and it is not recommended to leave an infected tooth in the mouth.
Yes. However, because a ‘dead’ tooth is more brittle, it is best to have a crown for extra support and strength.
